Belly of the Beast is the seventh episode of the second season of From and the seventeenth of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
Boyd and Kristi seek to capitalize on the apparent death of the Nightmare Creature. Jim finds an unlikely ally in the volatile Randall.
Plot[]
The next morning, Kristi confirms to Fatima that she is pregnant, and asks if she has told Ellis yet. When Fatima answers no, Kristi says that although they are not in ideal conditions, women have been giving birth for thousands of years, and Fatima has the added benefit of having a third-year medical student at her disposal. Fatima does not want to tell Ellis yet, but before they can talk further Kenny summons them upstairs. Once everyone is gathered, Boyd and Kenny lead everyone in inspecting the dead body of Smiley. Kristi marvels at the fact that Boyd actually killed one of them, and Fatima asks what they should do with the body. Kenny says they should burn it, but Boyd and Kristi want to bring it inside and perform an autopsy to learn more about the Creatures. Kenny points out that they do not even know if it is safe to touch the Creature, and Boyd says that it’s Kristi’s call. Kristi decides to study it, and Mari offers to get a sheet so they can drag it inside. Boyd then tells Ellis to get back to Colony House to avoid having a crowd descend on the Clinic to check on him while they’re doing the autopsy. Kristi gives Ellis and Fatima the go ahead, telling them to return if he has any trouble breathing. Boyd then notices Elgin looking downcast and asks if he is ok, and Elgin says he is fine. Ellis tells his father to be careful as he leaves, while Boyd, Kristi and Mari prepare to bring the Creature into the Clinic. Kenny repeats his objections, but Kristi says that they may never get another chance to do this.
In Colony House, Dale has been sequestered in a bedroom, and he asks Donna if Ellis will be ok. She curtly replies that she has no idea because she spent the whole night putting food in saltwater. Dale asks if he is going to be put in the Box like they do in Town, and apologizes for hurting Ellis, calling him a good kid. However, he repeats his fear that with the bus passengers, they do not have enough food. Dale says there are hard choices coming, and no one seems willing to make them. Donna exits, locking the door behind her and telling the armed guard at the door that no one gets in or out. Bakta then confronts Donna and asks what happens next. Donna answers that they will see how Ellis is doing, but Bakta wants to know how they expect her and the bus passengers to live in the house with someone who just tried to kill all of them. Bakta explains that he wanted to kick them all out in the middle of the night. Matthias then informs them that Ellis and Fatima have returned. Donna promises Bakta that she and her people are safe in Colony House and they take care of their own. Donna then rushes downstairs and helps a recuperating Ellis up the stairs with Fatima.
Meanwhile, the Matthews and Mrs. Liu prepare breakfast. Ethan says he wants to see Victor, and Julie offers to take him, but Jim does not think it’s a good idea. Tabitha disagrees, prompting Jim to asks to talk outside. In the backyard, Jim accuses Tabitha of undermining him. Tabitha strongly disagrees, reminding him that he took Ethan to see Sara, who tried to kill him. Jim insists that was different but Tabitha counters that it was their acceptance of the fact that they cannot lock their kids away until they return home. Tabitha warns him that if they do, the kids will sneak out, and this way they know where he is. Jim is uncomfortable with their nine year old son hanging out with Victor, whom he views as strange and dangerous due to the gun he carries in his lunchbox. Tabitha reminds him that Victor saved both her and Julie. Jim dismisses her, saying that's merely what "they" wanted her to see, and repeating that when she tries to explain what she saw in the tunnels. Fed up, Tabitha asks how “they” created the monsters, which she has seen up close. Tabitha points out that Jim is certain that the voice on the radio is the answer to everything, but asks if he has considered that it may not have been a person. Jim asks what else she thinks it was, and she admits she does not know and it terrifies her. Tabitha ends the argument, and invites Jim to eat with her and the children. Jim then notices Randall flying his drone overhead.
After moving Smiley’s body into the Clinic, they prepare to perform an autopsy. Kenny worries that cutting open the Creatures will release the worms from Boyd’s arm. Mari runs outside the room and vomits, and Kristi explains that she is going through withdrawal. Boyd asks if they can do anything to help, but Kristi just wants to get the autopsy over with, and Kenny leaves to get her gloves and a saw.
Jim approaches Randall in the bus, beginning by thanking Randall for trying to help dig out Tabitha. Randall points out that given that Tabitha wasn’t even down there, it seems like he got Tom and Brick killed for nothing. Jim asks him if it felt good saying that, and Randall asks him what he wants. Jim asks how much he thinks the drone can carry. Randall is confused, and Jim invites Randall to take a walk with him outside Town. Randall says that Jim sounds like a pervert who hangs out at playgrounds, causing Jim to lose patience and say that the drone could help them get home for his nephew’s birthday, for which the drone was supposed to be a gift.
Ethan approaches Victor as he examines the trees, and Victor tells him to go away. Ethan asks why he is being mean when they are supposed to be friends. Victor replies that they are friends, but Ethan says it doesn’t feel like it. Victor explains that he is trying to protect Ethan and it is safer for Ethan to stay away because bad things happen to Victor’s friends. Ethan asks what is the point of being friends if they can’t be friends. As he walks away, Victor sullenly says that the orange marker he gave him was dry and a bad gift. Victor says that he has a lot of measuring to do, and Ethan can help if he wants, delighting him.
In the Clinic, Marielle’s withdrawal gets worse. Kristi gets her in bed and gives her some water. She then exits, leaving Mari to sleep, and helps Boyd bandage his palm. Boyd assures her that Mari will be ok because she has Kristi. Kristi explains that Mari had been sober for a year when they met, but relapsed when she disappeared. Boyd tells her that this is not her fault, but Kristi continues to blame herself for not noticing the withdrawal symptoms. Kristi then worries about what Kenny said about Smiley’s body, and both admit that they are scared.
In the Bar, Tabitha approaches Jade while he works on refining the distillery. She asks him why he wasn’t surprised when he found her yelling on the ground in the woods. Jade reveals that Jim found him like that once, but did not explain what happened. Jade tells Tabitha that in his hallucination, he was attacked by an angry Civil War soldier. Jade then tells her that if she wants to learn more, she needs to help him with the still.
Meanwhile, Jim and Randall walk while Jim explains his theory about the Town and about the voice on the radio tower. Jim points out that there have been experiments like this going on for a long time, and when they get declassified, one wonders about the ones that are still kept hidden. They then arrive at the crashed RV, and begin discussing how to strip the antenna down so they can fly it over the trees with the drone. Randall asks that if Jim believes that this is all an experiment, whether or not he’s considered that some of the people are in on it.
In Colony House, Julie is shocked to hear from a recuperating Ellis that Dale stabbed him. Ellis explains that things have been tense in Colony House, but both he and Fatima assure her that they are fine. Julie prepares to leave to let them rest, and is given a goodbye hug by Fatima. Julie says she misses them, Fatima returns the sentiment and Ellis says she is welcome any time, while Julie says they are welcome at the Liu house. As she exits, she almost runs into Donna, who is carrying a tray of food. Donna asks if she is leaving already, and Julie jokes that she has to make sure Ethan isn’t building a spaceship with Victor. After she leaves, Ellis says he thought they were in the midst of a food shortage, which Donna says is temporary and he needs to regain his strength. Donna apologizes for not being present when the incident happened, but Ellis tells her that Dale’s actions are not her fault. Donna praises Fatima for getting Ellis to the Clinic in time and leaves them. As Julie leaves, she runs into Elgin on the porch, and she awkwardly jokes about how they always meet on the porch. Elgin asks if she can walk with him so they can talk.
In the Clinic, Kristi, Boyd and Kenny begin the autopsy on Smiley. As she makes the first incision across the chest, the body twitches, startling all of them. Kenny begins to freak out and repeats his opposition to this. Kenny storms out, followed by Kristi, who tries to calm him down. Kenny explains that he isn’t worried about the monster, the most frightening thing he’s ever seen, but about the things that killed it. Kristi explains that’s why they have to do the autopsy, to learn what killed the monsters and see if they can use it to fight back. Kenny worries that whatever is inside the Creature could harm them. Kristi is willing to take that risk now that they finally have a way of fighting the Creatures and admits she is terrified, which is why she needs Kenny in there with her, reminding him that they are supposed to be in this together. Kenny says they aren’t anymore, causing Kristi to scoff. Kenny regrets what he said, and explains that he is happy Marielle is here. Kenny tells Kristi that he loves her and all he wants is for her to be happy, but he is unwilling to watch her put herself in danger. Kenny apologizes, but a hurt Kristi goes back inside, leaving a regretful Kenny. Inside, Mari wakes up and looks for Kristi. She checks the boiler room where Smiley’s body is being kept but finds it empty. Panicking, she searches for Kristi and finds Boyd, who asks her if she is ok. However, they then see Smiley alive and walking towards them. Boyd tells Marielle to run as he begins firing at Smiley. Mari is frozen by fear, and begins to hear a familiar tune and notices a music box nearby. Right as Smiley is upon her, she wakes up in her bed, gaping for breath.
In the greenhouse outside Colony House, Fatima finds Donna inspecting the plants, which keep dying as if being grown in poison soil. Fatima reveals that she is pregnant, and Donna is delighted, hugging her and saying she wishes she could have seen Ellis’ face when he found out he will be the father. Fatima confesses that she hasn’t told him because she was told that she cannot have kids, making her think that this place is trying to torture and mock her like the Creatures at night. Donna begins laughing, and explains that they have seen so many unexplainable, horrible things, so they assume everything impossible that happens is bad. However, Fatima met the love of her life in this nightmare and is now having a baby with him which she was told she couldn’t have. Fatima is still hesitant, but Donna asks her if after all she has seen she can’t believe in a miracle, which is the flip side of a nightmare. Fatima asks what if Donna is wrong, but Donna simply asks what if she is right.
In the Bar, after they finish fixing the still, Jade begins to explain his visions. The first was the man crushed by a boulder in the armoire in the Root Cellar, then the Civil War soldiers, and then the vision of Christopher. Tabitha asks about Christopher, and Jade gives her the photo of him with the journal, and points out child Victor in the background. Tabitha asks if the visions are different every time, and Jade says yes, except for the symbol which is always present. Tabitha explains that she always sees terrifying children, which mad her think she was losing her mind or being punished for Thomas’ death. Jade offers her condolences before telling her that she is not being punished, and offers the possibility that they are just trapped in a messed up place with no explanation behind it. Tabitha then notices the journal with the symbols, and says she saw it in the tunnels, which Jade then asks about.
Victor and Ethan continue inspecting the trees, and Victor says they have to be thorough. Victor notices that the trees are losing their leaves, but Ethan points out that happens every year. Victor explains that this has never happened before, and Ethan asks if that is bad. Victor remarks that change in the Township is usually bad, but Ethan says that if it’s never happened before, it might be good.
In the Clinic, Kristi continues the autopsy with Boyd’s help. Kenny returns to help and helps them remove the sternum. Kristi is shocked to see that the Creature has the same anatomy as a human, but shriveled and desiccated, with no fluids to speak of. Kristi is dismayed by the absence of blood, recalling Boyd’s description of the worms. She digs in the body looking for some fluid but begins to break down and begins stabbing at the body randomly. Kenny notices an orange liquid, and Kristi says it’s bile leaking out of the gallbladder. Boyd and Kenny are encouraged by this, and they work to gather it.
In Town, Elgin tells Julie about what happened at the Clinic with Smiley. Elgin tells her that she can’t tell anyone, as Boyd instructed him. Julie promises not to, but is encouraged by the news that they can hurt and kill the Creatures. Julie notices that Elgin seems unhappy, and asks why. Elgin explains that he feels like there is something he is supposed to remember from his dream on the bus the day they arrived, and seeing Smiley’s body reminded him but he still can’t remember it. Elgin adds that he isn’t sure what’s real or not, and Julie sympathizes with him. Julie remarks that there is always some new insane thing that comes along, and they all go through it. Elgin comments that she seems to be weathering it well, which Julie jokingly takes as a sign that Elgin is in dire straits. Julie reveals that she does have a trick to deal- she draws a bath and sinks her head in until the water is level with her ears. The sound reminds her of the ocean, and she meditates in peace. Elgin says he doesn’t take baths, and Julie jokes that she can’t help him then.
After the autopsy, Kenny asks Boyd if he thinks Smiley’s bile will kill other Creatures. Boyd admits he has no idea, and Kenny asks how they will test it. Boyd says they will leave that problem for tomorrow. Kenny begins to leave and tells Boyd to talk to Kristi for him. As he leaves, Boyd offers Kenny his badge back, but Kenny simply says that he’ll see him around. Inside, Kristi climbs into bed with Marielle, who is still ailing. Mari asks how it went, and Kristi answers that they’ll have to wait and see before asking Mari how she is. Mari says she had a nightmare where Smiley came alive and there was a music box, grimly remarking that Boyd is giving him her nightmares. Mari says she is fine and Kristi does not need to worry, but Kristi continues to hold her.
In Colony House, Elgin runs a bath and tries to follow Julie’s advice. However, he hears the music box which appears nearby. Elgin is then pushed underwater by a terrifying corpse-like figure who holds him down.
