Camden is a town in Maine in the Northeastern United States. It is the childhood home of Victor Kavanaugh and his family, as well as the place Tabitha Matthews lands after being expelled from the Township.
History[]
Season 2[]
After being pushed out of the Lighthouse by the Boy in White, Tabitha lands in the woods near Camden, where she is found by hikers. After spending three days unconscious, she wakes up and is informed that she is in St. Anthony’s Hospital.[1]
Season 3[]
A shocked Tabitha tries to process what she has been told, and asks where the hospital is located. Dr. Brody tells her that she is in Camden, Maine. Tabitha sneaks out of the hospital and calls her mother with a teenager's phone, letting her know that she is alright but not revealing anything about what has happened since she and her family went missing.
Noticing a church nearby, Tabitha goes to confession. Tabitha says she has nowhere else to go but can’t tell anyone what has happened because they will think her crazy, and that she is on the verge of breaking down. The priest tries to comfort her and begins talking about God, but Tabitha interrupts him and says if God is real then he made the Towship, suffering and let her baby fall off the changing table. As she begins to leave, the Priest stops her and asks about Thomas and whether she has other children, noting the lunchbox. Tabitha explains it belongs to Victor, who gave it to her before she left a place where monsters emerge at night that people can’t believe, and a tree took her to a lighthouse, but a boy pushed her out saying “this is the only way.” She admits she has no clue what she is supposed to do or get back to her trapped family. The Priest asks what Victor prepared for her, promising that he wants to help her. Tabitha reminices about how Victor is still a little boy. As she looks through the lunchbox, she sees an address for Victor’s home: 1597 Burrow Street, in Camden. Tabitha then rushes out.
Tabitha finds the address in Victor’s lunchbox as a car arrives. The driver tells her to leave, but recognizes the lunchbox in her arms, and demands she tell him where she found that. Tabitha realizes that he is Victor’s father.[2]
Tabitha faints after meeting Henry. She is carried inside and put on the couch. When she wakes up, Tabitha tells Henry about the Township and its laws and customs. However he does not believe her, and reveals that he called the police on her 20 minutes ago. After mentioning visions of Ghoulish Children, Henry begins to believe her. When the police arrive, he says he thought there was an intruder but it was a false alarm. Henry then reveals that Miranda had visions of the Township before every arriving in it.[3]
The next day, Tabitha finds the Bottle Tree in Henry's backyard. Henry explains that it is a replica of an art installation by Miranda in a nearby town. He then remembers that the original Bottle Tree is where they took acid and Miranda began to have visions of the Township. Tabitha insists that they travel there. As they get in the car, Joni Mitchell’s “Blue” begins playing. Henry explains that the song was Miranda’s favorite, and the car plays it because the tape is stuck. A shocked Tabitha says it is also her and her husband’s song.
As they drive, Tabitha finds a bracelet in Henry’s glove compartment and asks where he got that, as it is similar to the one she made Jim. After Henry answers that Miranda made it for him, Tabitha starts to believe that she is not really in Camden and is still stuck in the Township. As Tabitha continues to spiral and tries to leave, Henry tells her that she does not get to arrive and say that his son is alive and then leave. As she tries to get out of the car, Henry holds the door shut and begins driving, but they are hit by an oncoming vehicle. The two are picked up by an ambulance that ends up getting trapped in the Township.[4]
