Creatures

The Creatures advance on the RV.

The Creatures are humanoid monsters that come out at night to hunt the people trapped in the Township, brutally slaughtering and often torturing any human they come across. They are first seen as mindless, but eventually show themselves to be intelligent, constructing hunting strategies, and even engaging in catch-and-release tactics to sow fear among the residents.

Appearance[]

The creatures manifest in human form, exhibiting a pale, ghostly complexion and wearing attire reminiscent of mid-20th century archetypes. Their sinister smiles create an unsettling atmosphere. This human disguise enables effortless deception, lulling victims into a false sense of security. Upon revelation, their true, grotesque appearance is exposed, revealing a deformed, distorted body structure adorned with long, razor-sharp claws and rows of jagged, deep-sea-inspired dental features. Their gradual, menacing approach and sinister demeanor amplify the terror they inspire.

Characteristics and Behavior[]

These grotesque creatures are terrifying predators with a chilling combination of physical and psychological prowess. They are deformed, possessing razor-sharp claws, jagged teeth, beady eyes, and sinewy limbs. In their human form, they appear ghastly and pallid. Nocturnal by nature, they spend daylight hours in a sleep-like state deep within caves. However, they can be roused from this state, as evidenced by an encounter where Victor and his father were warned by a fully-awakened creature.

These cunning predators often hunt in packs, though they may also act alone. They never run, instead walking deliberately while employing psychological manipulation to exploit their victims' vulnerabilities. These creatures are adept at gaining trust, often using their knowledge of the residents' names to their advantage. One such creature, a female, manipulated a lonely man into allowing her into his home by feigning human warmth.

Once a resident is captured, the creatures engage in horrifyingly brutal attacks, often involving dismemberment and evisceration. They may also torture victims in front of others, leaving the surviving witness traumatized. These creatures possess supernatural strength, the ability to shapeshift, and unsettlingly adept psychological manipulation. These abilities amplify their terrifying presence and allow them to inflict calculated psychological torment. They do not appear to feed on their victims, as they have survived for long periods with no human visitors. Instead, they engage in savage organ removal for reasons that remain unknown.

Despite their monstrous nature, these creatures exhibit some human-like qualities, such as the ability to clean themselves and the desire to appear warm-blooded. They also collect the belongings of their victims, storing them in loose piles within their subterranean lair. The purpose of this behavior remains unknown.

History[]

Background[]

At some point in the past, the creatures made a deal with "It" which led to them sacrificing their children in exchange for immortality.[1]

Travelers have been getting trapped in the Township as far back as the 1970s and 80s, and they would hide from the Creatures at night, hoping not to be found and survive until morning. When Victor was a child, all the other humans were killed by the Creatures, and he was left alone for an unknown (though presumably long) amount of time.[2]

Shortly after Boyd Stevens arrived in Town with his wife and son, he stumbles across the Talisman Cave in the Forest while fleeing from the Creatures, and realizes that the Talismans repel the Creatures. This allowed the people in Town to move into the houses and buildings by posting the Talismans at their doors, instead of hiding in different places every night. Prior to finding the Talismans, the Creatures would shriek and howl at night, but afterwards began to whisper.[3]

Season 1[]

After 96 nights without incident, the young Meagan Pratt is persuaded to let the Old Lady Creature (tricking the girl into believing that she was her grandmother) inside, and it slaughters her and her mother Lauren Pratt.[4] The next day, two cars arrive, but swerve to avoid each other on the road, causing them to crash. The Matthews' young son, Ethan, is trapped in the RV after his leg is impaled by a table leg. His mother and sister are sent back to Town for the night, while Sheriff Boyd Stevens, his father Jim and Kristi the paramedic stay in the RV overnight with a Talisman. They successfully stabilize Ethan, and wait out the night. Meanwhile, Sara Myers leaves the doors to the Clinic open, allowing Creatures to enter and slaughter Gina and Bing-Qian Liu.[5] As punishment for his negligence causing the deaths of his wife and daughter, Frank Pratt is put in the Box overnight. After dark, the Creatures burst in and kill him.[6]

One of the Creatures with the appearance of a beautiful young woman and calling herself Jasmine manipulates Kevin, a lonely resident of Colony House, into falling in love with her, and the two would often secretly talk from opposite sides of a window.[7] On the night of the anniversary of Fatima Hassan's arrival in the Township, Jasmine persuades Kevin to let her inside. Jasmine then kills him, and lets several other Creatures in. They attack the residents, killing Trudy and 12 others before morning.[8] While digging in her basement, Tabitha Matthews falls through and lands in the Tunnels, and is found by Victor. Victor says that it isn’t safe, for the caverns are where the Creatures sleep, and shows her the cave paintings that they make. before dragging her off.[9]

Season 2[]

While wandering through the Tunnels, Victor and Tabitha Matthews get lost and arrive in a chamber that contains a number of sleeping Creatures. They escape just in time as the Creatures start waking up.[10] Meanwhile in Town, the Matthews' house collapsed, trapping Jim Matthews, Tom and Brick beneath the rubble. With no time to get them out, the three are left to hide and hopefully escape detection throughout the night. The arrival of the Grand Rapids Runner Bus adds to the chaos, and a number of passengers run away after Donna Raines and Kenny Liu have to corral them inside at gunpoint. As the night goes on, several passengers are caught by the Creatures outside of the Sheriff's Office, despite Fatima Hassan's efforts to convince them. She narrowly escapes the Creatures after Ellis Stevens pulls her inside, and the two are taunted by Creatures outside the door. The Smiley Creature finds an elderly couple hiding on the bus and kills them both. Two passengers, Brian and Kelly, hide in the empty Bar, but are convinced to open the door by Creatures pretending to be passengers seeking shelter. In the rubble of the Matthews' home, Brick succumbs to his injuries, but his death throes attract the attention of a Creature, which attacks Tom and drags him out.[11]

Randall is sentenced to living in the bus, and struggles to sleep while the Creatures knock on the windows of the bus. Fed up, he goes to the door and prepares to exit to confront them before remembering. Outside, the Old Lady Creature asks if he is comfortable. Randall asks them if they think this is scary, and taunts them about how they can’t get inside because of the Talisman. Randall tells them he is not afraid of them, and they leave him alone. Randall yells at them not to walk away from him. The Creatures then begin howling.[12]

After Ellis Stevens is accidentally stabbed, Elgin bravely runs out to the van outside Colony House and brings it to the front entrance, picks up Ellis and Fatima Hassan and drives to the Clinic, dodging Creatures all the while. When they arrive, Boyd Stevens, Ellis' father, refuses to do a life-saving blood transfusion out of fear of passing on the worms that infect his body to his son. Boyd runs outside instead and calls for the Creatures, and the Smiley Creature arrives. Boyd cuts his own hand, then Smiley's throat, and presses his wound to Smiley's. The worms leave Boyd's body and enter Smiley's, killing the Creature. The other Creatures inspect what is happening to Smiley and leave Boyd alone, allowing him to run back to the Clinic.[13]

The next day, Kristi Miller leads Boyd and Kenny in performing an autopsy on Smiley. They find that he has the exact same anatomy as a human, albeit desiccated and devoid of any fluids. Kristi gets frustrated and stabs the body repeatedly, and they find bile leaking out of the gallbladder, which they collect.[14]

After they get stuck in the Forest, Boyd, Donna, Jim and Randall shelter in the RV for the night. The Creatures surround the RV and begin advancing on it, but suddenly stop, which is deeply abnormal for them. Eventually, Randall runs off on his own, and Boyd tries to fire bullets dipped into Smiley's bile at the Creatures, but they have no effect. Boyd, Donna and Jim then escape in the van after they hot wire it.[15]

Season 3[]

The Milkman and another Creature open the doors of the Barn and the pens, allowing the livestock to roam free in the Town as part of their plan to lure out the townspeople. Boyd, Jade, Victor and Tian-Chen try to round up the animals and get them inside so they don't lose their last remaining food source. During the ensuing chaos, Ethan tries to go outside and help his favorite goat, but allows the Old Lady Creature inside. He and Julie flee the house. Sara Myers helps them hide before they find shelter in the bus.

Victor and Tian-Chen are able to herd some of the sheep inside the Bar, but the Milkman Creature kills one of the cows. Boyd and Tian-Chen herd the last cow into the Barn and lock the door behind them and place a Talisman at the entrance, believing themselves safe. However, a group of Creatures led by the Cowboy Creature apprehend them, and force Boyd to watch as they torture Tian-Chen to death. [16]
