Biography[]
Background[]
Nathan and his younger sister, Sara, grew up in Boston. Sara eventually became trapped in an abusive relationship. Nathan rescued her from the situation.[1] As they were driving home from New Hope, Pennsylavnia, they became trapped in the Township.[2]
Season 1[]
Sara finds Nathan as he is heading to the Barn to feed the livestock, and the two observe the Matthews family struggle to return to the highway after the road keeps returning them to the center of Town. Sara mournfully remarks how the worst part is when they still expect to find the road that leads to home. Nathan asks if she is alright, and she answers that she is fine and that he is a good brother, but he should go because the animals aren't going to feed themselves. Nathan replies that it would be cool if they did, and promises to be back soon.[3]
Later that night, Sara showers in her home while her brother knocks on the door outside and says he’ll get dinner started. A tearful Sara exits and tells Nathan that she didn’t have a choice, and asks for his help. Sara reminds Nathan of the story about the little girl in the room filled with broken glass. The little girls knows the pieces used to mean or be something, but in trying to put the shards back together, they cut deep into her skin. Nathan begs her to tell him what she did, and Sara reveals that she left the Clinic door open.[4]
The next day, Sara meets Nathan who reminds her that she promised she would stay home. Sara says they would have wondered why she didn’t show up, and promises that she wants and needs to help. She tells her brother to get back to the Barn, and promises that it will be okay.[5]
While Nathan feeds the animals in the Barn, someone comes running up and informs him that something happened to Sara at the Diner and she’s being taken to the Clinic. As she's being treated, she notices Nathan approaching and tells Boyd that Sara wants to be left alone. Boyd meets him outside the Clinic and tells him that she’s fine but asleep and he can come by tomorrow, assuring him that Kristi will watch her overnight. Nathan frantically tries to get in, and Boyd asks if something else is going on. Nathan says he’s just worried about his little sister. Boyd reassures Nathan that Sara is in good hands and tells him that he can see her in the morning. He then returns to his house and gazes at her bloodstained dress, and ponders what to do.
As Sara is leaving the Clinic, Nathan arrives, and the two walk away together. Nathan says they need to talk and Sara apologizes for worrying him. He says he just needs to know what happened, and she explains that she was standing one minute and on the floor the next, but does not remember anything else. An exasperated Nathan asks her why she’s acting like everything is okay, and she responds that she needs to get to the Diner before Mrs. Liu starts to worry. Sara promises that everything will be okay, and tells Nathan she loves him.
Nathan looks for Father Khatri at the Church, but he is not present. He eventually finds Father Khatri meditating in a field, and asks what the rules are regarding confession. Khatri promises that anything he says will stay between them and God. Nathan then asks him what if it’s really bad. After Nathan reveals everything, Khatri says he should have come forward much sooner. As Khatri begins walking away, Nathan stops him and says he doesn’t want Sara to go in the Box, and reminds him that he promised it would stay between them. Khatri says he plans on keeping his promise, but they have to worry about the townspeople. Nathan says Sara will be at the Diner, and the two begin heading that way.
Nathan searches for Sara in the Diner, but Tom tells him that he saw her heading to the Barn with Tabitha and Ethan. Nathan arrives just as Sara is about to stab Ethan, telling her to stop, but she tells him that this is how they go home. Ethan is able to wriggle out of her grasp, and Nathan runs behind his sister and restrains her. As she tries to escape his hold on her, she accidentally slashes Nathan’s throat with the scalpel, causing her to begin weeping just as Khatri arrives. By the time more people arrive, Sara has fled. Kristi attempts to resuscitate Nathan, but it is a lost cause.[6]
Boyd and Sara venture into the Forest in order to find answers. As they trek through the woods, Sara says that Nathan had a theory about the Township, that if they tried too hard to leave or pushed too hard, the Township would push back.[7] After they get caught outside in a storm, the Boy in White appears to Sara, and tells her that Nathan was right and the Township is angry at them now before leading them to a Farway Tree.[8]
Season 2[]
After Sara returns to Town, she goes to her former house and tries to find her belongings. She finds Nathan's jacket, but the new occupants, Reggie and Paula, order her to leave, refusing to give her the jacket and telling her that the rest of her things are stored in the Diner. She later reminisces about how she and Nathan used to decorate Christmas ornaments, but they only had one with them when they got trapped in Town. Sara later retrieves her things and the ornament from the Diner, but is confronted by Kenny, who is furious at her for causing his father's death. He scatters her belongings and shatters the ornament.[9]
Jim Matthews and Randall Kirkland begin to believe that the Township is some sort of conspiracy, and certain people are in on it, with Randall believing that Nathan's death was either an inside job, or Sara was pushed to the limit. Jim and Randall go to the Church where they find Sara, and ask if they can talk to her. Jim asks how she arrived in Town, and Sara says she and Nathan were heading back to Boston. Randall asks where they were heading from, and Jim explains that they are trying to determine a pattern in how people arrive. Sara answers that she had been living in New Hope, Pennsylvania, but Nathan was helping her move back. They then ask about the day Nathan died, and Sara refuses to talk about it. Jim tries to sympathize with her, but Randall bluntly asks if Nathan is still alive. Donna then arrives, which Randall declares convenient. Donna asks Sara if she can stitch up some clothes from Colony House. Randall asks Donna if she thinks she’s a bigshot and calls her a tollbooth operator. Jim drags Randall out, and Donna asks Sara if she is ok. Sara asks why they asked about Nathan and think he is alive. [10]
After cicadas swarm the Township and news spreads that no one can go to sleep, out of fear that a new threat might kill them. Sara recalls that Nathan used to be terrified of cicadas as a child because he thought they were monsters. Sara asks if the fears of the people that die in the Township become part of the Forest, and they are experiencing Nathan’s nightmare.[11]
