Shatter is the first episode of Season 3 of From, and the 21st of the series overall.

Synopsis[]

Boyd feels the town slipping away from him as the weather grows colder and the residents more desperate. Jim and Kenny venture into the forest to look for Tabitha even as she mounts a frantic search of her own.

Plot[]

As Tabitha struggles to process what Dr. Brody has just told her, she asks where the hospital is located. Brody reveals that she is in Camden, Maine, and asks Tabitha for her name, and if she could tell them more about what happened. Tabitha remains in disbelief as a nurse informs Dr. Brody that the police are arriving shortly, which Brody explains is just a formality. Brody asks to run a few more tests later before leaving. Tabitha then rips out her IV and changes into her clothes. She sneaks out of the hospital, only to see the Boy in White across the street. Tabitha chases after him and confronts him in a cafe, only to find that it is just a normal boy, whose mother scolds her.

Three days after defeating the Music Box Monster, Boyd rebandages the gunshot wound in his shoulder in his office. A vision of Father Khatri notes Kristi should be doing that, but Boyd responds that she is busy tending to Marielle. Khatri asks about Marielle, Randall and Julie. Boyd says they are doing fine, noting they’re all still alive. Khatri argues that one of his own people tried to kill him, half the Town is still afriad to try and sleep, there’s a food shortage, and the weather is getting colder. Boyd says he does not want a panic. He recalls how the Music Box Monster tried to taunt him with visions of Abby telling him to give up hope, but it was not really her. Boyd then asks what the vision of Khatri really is. However the vision says it cannot answer.

Outside, Tian-Chen brings Ethan back to their house. Ethan scolds Victor for telling the adults that he went to look for his mother, and Jim sends him inside. Julie returns from looking for Ethan and then leaves to go on a walk, telling her father that none of this is his fault. Boyd approaches Jim, and tries to talk him out of searching for Tabitha, saying it is too dangerous to be in the Forest overnight. Jim notes that his family is falling apart and his children need their mother. Boyd argues that he and Sara tried to venture into the woods, and their tent got dragged by some unknown force, and barely made it back alive. Boyd indicates that she may already be dead, angering Jim. Boyd relents, but says he may have a safer solution.

In Colony House, Fatima struggles with morning sickness while Nicky admonishes her for taking too long in the bathroom. When she exits, a concerned Ellis urges her to eat, but Fatima says her stomach has been off and she just needs rest. Noticing Ellis is anxious, Tillie tells him that the first months are hard, but Fatima will be alright. Donna grabs Ellis to help with the harvest, which he believes is too early. However, after losing half their crops to the storm, Donna does not want to risk the ground freezing. Noticing Elgin walking by in a daze, Donna asks if he has tried to sleep yet before telling Ellis to grab people to help harvest.

In the Lius’ Home, Boyd tells Jim and Kenny about his and Sara’s journey from the Talisman Hut to the Lighthouse. Boyd suggests using the Talisman Hut as a starting point for his searches and a place to shelter at night. After hearing that Sara had also been there, Kenny volunteers to join Jim. Kenny reasons that they cannot let Jim go out on his own. Kenny acknowledges that Boyd has many reasons to be afraid, but having lost a parent himself, he refuses to allow Julie and Ethan to lose both of theirs. They are interripted when a large object is thrown through the window of the Bar from the inside. They go to investigate and find Jade on the floor muttering, with the place covered in strings. Kenny says he was obsessed with the drawing but this is a new level, and they take Jade to the Sheriff’s Office to recover.

Meanwhile, Tabitha wanders through Camden, finding a market. She borrows a teenager’s phone and calls her mother, who is shocked and begins asking questions, noting that the police are looking for her and her family. Tabitha tells her mother she loves her, and she is trying to bring her family back before tearfully hanging up. She then notices a nearby church.

At the Diner, Kenny tells Kristi that he and Jim will be leaving soon, while Tian-Chen gives him a box of food so they don’t go hungry. She says that she wishes he would stay and urges him to be careful because she can’t lose him too. Kenny tells them that he and Jim will be fine.

Jim says goodbye to his children after getting Ethan to agree to stop running off. Outside, Boyd reminds Kenny about the Farway Trees and the spiderwebs, and to be back in the Talisman Hut before nightfall. Ellis comes running up and brings Boyd to the fields outside Colony House, where Meredith tells Donna that all their crops are rotten. Donna informs Boyd that everything that survived the storm is rotten, and they are officially out of food. A worried Boyd then asks how many people know.

Outside the Lius’ Home, a small mob tries to gain access to the food in the basement, but Tian-Chen refuses, noting the food is for everyone and more crops are coming. The mob pushes past her, despite her pleas. At the Barn, Randall tries to take Alma the goat, despite Ethan’s protests. As Ellis arrives, Victor draws his gun on Randall. Boyd calms Victor down and convinces him to hand him the gun. Boyd acknowledges to the gathered crowd that they have experienced a setback, but the animals are their remaining source of food. While they are scared and hungry, they still have to work together and make things last. Boyd tells them that the Township will not break them, and asks for time to figure things out. Randall reluctantly gives the goat back to Boyd who leads it with Ethan back to its pen.

Jim and Kenny trek through the forest, and Jim voices his appreciation to Kenny. They soon come across several Totems stuck in the ground. Kenny thinks they should turn around and head back to the cave, but Jim keeps following the trail and finds more of them until they come across several log cabins. Jim figures that they can shelter in the cabins instead and head out from there, and Boyd hadn’t noticed it because his tent was dragged past it.

In the Camden church, Tabitha goes to confession. Tabitha says she has nowhere else to go but can’t tell anyone what has happened because they will think her crazy, and that she is on the verge of breaking down. The priest tries to comfort her and begins talking about God, but Tabitha interrupts him and says if God is real then he made the Towship, suffering and let her baby fall off the changing table. As she begins to leave, the Priest stops her and asks about Thomas and whether she has other children, noting the lunchbox. Tabitha explains it belongs to Victor, who gave it to her before she left a place where monsters emerge at night that people can’t believe, and a tree took her to a lighthouse, but a boy pushed her out saying “this is the only way.” She admits she has no clue what she is supposed to do or get back to her trapped family. The Priest asks what Victor prepared for her, promising that he wants to help her. Tabitha reminices about how Victor is still a little boy. As she looks through the lunchbox, she sees an address for Victor’s home: 1597 Burrow Street, in Camden. Tabitha then rushes out.

In Colony House, an exhausted Elgin dozes off while crocheting with Tillie, who tells him he needs rest. Elgin says the issue is not the Music Box Monster, but this feeling that something watches him but he cannot remember when he wakes up. Tillie asks if it is the mummified and bloody Kimono Woman apparition in the hallway that only they can see. Elgin then wakes up on the couch alone and terrified.

While Victor sweeps in the Lius’ Home, Boyd and Donna discuss their dire food situation with Tian-Chen. Boyd asks if the animals can tide them over until they can plant a new crop, but Donna says that the soil is poisoned. Boyd refuses to give up, and says they need to carefully plan how to utilize their one remaining resource. Tian-Chen says they should plant crops in different locations to see if the soil is better. Boyd hypothesizes that they have to make it through three months of winter, and Donna says slaughtering the cows one by one might by them a month. Boyd asks about the goats just as Ethan walks in, and he walks back out, despondent. Boyd follows and tries to comfort him, telling him that the animals will be heros for saving them. Ethan asks that Alma be slaughtered first, so she does not have to watch her friends die.

Tabitha finds the address in Victor’s lunchbox as a car arrives. The driver tells her to leave, but recognizes the lunchbox in her arms, and demands she tell him where she found that. Tabitha realizes that he is Victor’s father.

As they shelter overnight in the cabin Jim says Kenny is right and they should have tried to find the spiderwebs, and thinks they should try and find higher ground the next day. They hear rustling outside, and something bangs against the wall of the cabin. Jim then realizes that if he dies, his kids will have nothing, and says they should head home in the morning.

In Town, the Creatures unlock the gates of the animal pens and the Barn, scattering the animals. In his office, Boyd’s hand shakes as he pours himself a drink. Jade wakes up, and accepts a drink from Boyd, who says it was Khatri’s. Boyd asks if Jade is ready to explain what is happening with him, and Jade says not yet grimly noting that they are not doing well. Boyd then notices the cattle wandering the streets. He and Boyd try to gather the livestock that is now roaming the Town, and are joined by Tian-Chen and Victor, who tell Ethan and Julie to stay inside. Randall notices Creatures drawing near and warns them with the bus horn. Ethan tries to go outside to help Alma, but the Old Lady Creature is at the door and forces her way inside as Julie grabs Ethan and runs. They are found by Sara, who helps them hide before they run to the safety of the bus, where Randall lets them inside.

As they try to herd animals into the Bar, the Milkman Creature kills one of the cows. Tian-Chen and Boyd lead the last cow into the Barn, locking the door behind them. However, they are greated by the Nurse, Mechanic and Cowboy Creatures, the latter noting that Boyd said the Township could not break him, quoting his exact words after he defeated the Music Box Monster. The Creatures cuff Boyd to a post as the Cowboy Creature says they will see if the place can’t break him. As they begin torturing Tian-Chen in front of him, he tries to support her and urges her to stay strong.
