"Strangers in a Strange Land" is the first episode of the second season of From and the eleventh of the series overall.
Synopsis[]
In Sheriff Boyd’s absence, Donna and Kenny struggle to manage the chaos as a busload of unwitting newcomers arrives in town. Victor and Tabitha go on a chilling journey through the nightmarish labyrinth of tunnels beneath the town.
Plot[]
As “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” by Bob Dylan plays on the Diner’s tabletop jukeboxes, Boyd walks through Town ringing the bell warning people to get inside before dark. Boyd looks around and he is the only one outside as storm clouds brew over Town. Boyd’s hand then begins shaking and he drops the bell as rain begins to fall before waking up at the bottom of the dry well. Boyd calls out, hoping to get a response. After hearing none, he begins to try and climb out, but slips and falls back down, prompting him to yell in frustration.
On the bus, one of the passengers, Elgin, listens to music before noticing his surroundings, which frightens him. He begins panicking, and says they have to turn around. He stands up and tries to convince the driver, but another passenger, Randall, tries to restrain him. As the driver, Bakta, orders them to their seats, Elgin vomits on Randall, who asks for the bus to stop.
At Colony House, the chaos reigns. Jade leads people in moving the radio equipment inside and out of the rain. Indoors, the lightbulbs continue exploding, one of them hitting Clara in the eye, and Kristi tends to her. Jade then notices that the bus has arrived in Town, shocking him. Julie asks Donna why her father ran off, but Donna cannot answer and orders the kids to go upstairs. Fatima leads Ethan upstairs, but the wind blows the winch through one of the windows, and Julie takes the opportunity to run after her father, with Ellis running after her. Jade then informs Donna about the bus outside the Diner.
Jim runs downstairs and finds the hole Tabitha had been digging filled with debris. After getting no response to his calls, he tries removing some of the debris.
Meanwhile, Victor leads Tabitha through the tunnels. Tabitha asks where they are going but Victor tells her not to talk, lest they wake the Creatures, who sleep in the caverns beneath the Town, and explains that he was told by the Boy in White to wait for her. As they walk, Tabitha finds a suitcase with a wedding dress inside, but Victor urges her to keep moving because the Creatures will wake up soon.
In Colony House, Kristi removes shards of glass from Clara’s face, while Donna tells Matthias to grab the shotguns. Kenny says they don’t need them, but Donna reminds him that there is a bus full of people with no idea about what they’ve rolled into. She tells him that they have a long night ahead, and that if things go sideways he needs to be ready to step up now that he’s sheriff.
Outside the Diner, one of the older passengers, Tillie, dances in the rain, while the others stand outside the locked Diner. On the bus, Elgin is tended to by Marielle, while Bakta cleans up his vomit. Brick asks her if she is a doctor, and she says she is a pediatric nurse. Mari asks if he knows where he is, and he asks her the same question. Brick asks him why he was screaming, and Elgin answers that he had a bad dream. Randall comes aboard and begins scolding Elgin, who apologizes. Randall calls him a freak, and Mari tells him to back off. Randall grabs his bag, and complains about how bad it smells. Mari offers to sit with Elgin until he is ready.
Julie and Ellis arrive in Town, with Tom meeting them. While Julie runs to her house, Ellis and Tom approach the bus passengers and tell them that more people will be down to help them and unlock the Diner. Bakta replies that they aren’t making a pit stop, and she simply needs a mop. Julie rushes down to the basement and finds her father standing over the filled-in hole and asks what happened. Julie then asks where her mother is and begins to panic, and Jim tells her to get as many people as possible to help. As she stares at the hole, Jim hugs his daughter and tells her she needs to be strong, and that her mother needs her. Julie leaves and tells Ellis that her mother is trapped in the basement. With Ellis’s arm broken, Tom asks for volunteers to help get Tabitha out. Brick and Randall volunteer, but Bakta says that they need to stay with the bus and that emergency services will handle it, prompting Randall to sarcastically call her a peach. Ellis stops Julie from following Tom into the her house, explaining that they can’t focus on her mother if they’re worried about her.
Donna and Kenny pull up in the van, and they remind each other and the people with them that they have to keep everyone calm. Kenny apologizes for their inconvenience and offers to get some tea for all of them and allows them into the Diner. Tom arrives with Randall and Brick in tow, and Jim explains to Tom that she had been digging to see where the wires went. Tom asks if she was digging in the basement, what caused the main floor to collapse. Jim asks for them just to help, and Randall assures him that they will get his wife out. As they begin removing debris, the floor above them begins to shake.
Victor and Tabitha continue making their way through the tunnels. After seeing rats feeding on the corpse of a bird, Tabitha says they should go back but Victor tells her they have to go through and be brave. Meanwhile, Boyd calls for Sara from the bottom of the dry well, and laughs bitterly about how she said they would be safe inside the tree, adding that this does not feel safe to him. A voice from the top calls out, and asks Boyd if he is real. Boyd answers that he is, and the voice offers to help Boyd if Boyd helps him. Boyd promises to if he helps him out. The voice says that Boyd has to climb up, and sends a rope down, warning him to hurry because “they” will be back soon.
In Colony House, Clara, now sporting an eyepatch for her blinded eye, finds Jade and asks him if they made “it” angry. Clara explains to Jade that the storm emerged from nowhere and the lights exploded, almost as if they made the place angry, and asks what they do now. Jade replies that he has one rolling paper left, so he is going to get stoned. After she leaves, the symbol appears on the wall in front Jade in blood, and a ventriloquist’s dummy next to him shrieks at him, prompting him to shout back, but both quickly disappear. Downstairs, Ethan gives a dustpan he found to Tian-Chen, who is helping to clean up the broken glass. Tian-Chen tells him to be careful, and Ethan asks how she thinks they broke, describing it as scary. Tian-Chen agrees, and Ethan asks if the others will return soon. Tian-Chen tells him not to be afraid, promising to protect him. Ethan says that he isn’t afraid, although after Tian-Chen gives him a look he admits the he is a bit scared. He says that quests can get scary, especially close to the end. Jade passes by, and Ethan follows him onto the porch, where he finds him smoking a joint. Ethan tells him that cigarettes are bad for him, and Jade tells him that it isn’t that kind of cigarette. Ethan asks Jade what is wrong with him, and Jade says it’s because he spent the last week thinking they might actually be able to escape only to have it literally come crashing down around them. Ethan says they will try again, and begins to talk about the Cromenockle, but Jade interrupts him and asks if he knows which room is Victor’s.
In the tunnels, Victor and Tabitha find a number of sleeping creatures surrounded by a collection of random objects, including the ventriloquists dummy Jade saw in his earlier vision, the sight of which causes Victor to run off. Tabitha finds him curled up in a corner, and asks him which way they should go. Victor says he is scared, because this isn’t the way the Boy told him to go. Tabitha tells him that they have to be brave and keep moving, and chooses one of the tunnels in the fork.
Jade rifles through Victor’s belongings, which Ethan says he shouldn’t do. Jade tells him that Victor is probably dead, and apologizes. Ethan says that he is wrong, and that Victor is doing his part of the quest, in which they all have a role to play. Ethan asks Jade why he is looking for Victor, and Jade answers that he has been having visions which include the symbols in the journal Tian-Chen gave him, where he found the photo, which he shows Ethan. Ethan realizes that the man in the photo has the journal, and in the background is a young Victor, therefore he might know the meaning of the symbol. Ethan agrees that symbols are important to a quest, but tells him he needs to figure out if they are good symbols or bad symbols, explaining that some symbols make people do bad things. Jade calls him creepy, and continues looking through Victor’s things.
Donna finishes explaining the situation to Bakta, who is in disbelief. Donna says she understands why Bakta does not believe her but the bus driver refuses to listen. In the Matthews’ house, the group makes progress on emptying the hole. Jim realizes that there is a chamber beneath it, but the floor above begins collapsing. Outside, Marielle helps a dizzy Elgin to the Diner, but he collapses and begins seizing. Kenny and Julie rush to his aid. Meanwhile, the Matthews’ house begins rapidly collapsing. Julie and the others watch as the house completely implodes, and she runs to the scene. Inside, Jim and Tom are alive, but pinned, along with Brick, who they cannot tell if he is alive. Jim tells Julie to stay with Donna and do whatever she says. Randall emerges unscathed from the rubble and is examined by Kristi.
Tabitha and Victor find a chamber with various archways blocked by sticks, and a stacked pile of stones in the center. A ball-like stone is rolled from one, knocking the stacked stones over. Tabitha examines one of the archways, and sees a vision of a Ghoulish Child, frightening her. Victor warns her that the Creatures are beginning to wake up, and they panic before heading down another tunnel.
Kristi continues to examine Randall for any injuries, while Marielle and Kenny tend to Elgin. Kristi and Marielle spot each other and are shocked, Marielle being the fiancee Kristi had mentioned. The two cry and embrace.
Boyd climbs the dry well, and sees a vision of Ellis at the bottom, talking about the boat. Boyd almost slips, but catches himself. The voice asks if he is ok, and Boyd says he is fine. Meanwhile, Tabitha and Victor emerge in the forest, and Victor begins leading them.
At the collapsed Matthews’ house, Bakta tries to get the passengers back on the bus, promising to send emergency services when they reach the next town. Donna tasks Matthias with watching her while they move debris, but Jim tells them to stop. He explains that they everything is resting on something else, so they need to be slow and deliberate if they want to get everyone out alive. Julie warns that the sun is about to go down, and Jim says to leave them overnight. Donna agrees that it’s the best course of action, assuring her that she survived for a year without the Talismans, and if her father and the others stay quiet, they can too. Donna then notices Bakta starting up the bus, and warns Kenny. Bakta tries to get everyone back on the bus, while Donna tells her to stop. Donna tells everyone that if they are outside when the sun goes down, they will all die. Donna warns that they will die if they are outside when night falls, and she is happy to explain further if they get in the Diner. As Ellis, Fatima and Kenny try to explain to the disbelieving bus passengers, Donna gets a shotgun from the van and shoots out the bus’s tires. Several passengers run away, and Fatima tries to run after them. Kenny fires his pistol into the air, and herds many of the passengers into the Diner. Julie covers some of the rubble with tarps, and Jim tells her that there is a cavern underneath the debris, and that her mother will be ok if she made it down there. Julie promises to get her father out, and Kenny arrives to get her inside. The two say they love each other before finishing to cover the rubble and heading inside.
Boyd reaches the top of the shaft and collapses on the ground in relief. He is startled by the voice, which is impressed that he made it given the length of the climb. Boyd finds the voice belongs to an elderly, emaciated man that is shackled to the wall. The man asks if Boyd has a gun, and when Boyd answers yes, requests that Boyd kill him.
