Victor Kavanaugh is a peculiar resident of Colony House, having been trapped in the Township since he was a young boy, spending much of that time alone. While this makes him more knowledgeable than anyone about the mysteries and otherworldly phenomena that surrounds them, trauma stemming from the deadly consequences of past decisions and other horrific events in his childhood make him reluctant to divulge its secrets.
Biography[]
Background[]
In 1978, his mother, Miranda, and sister Eloise, became trapped in the Township. Miranda would tell many stories to her children, who drew pictures based off them. Along with the other people trapped, they lived in the Town, and were forced to shelter in makeshift hideouts at night so as not to get eaten by the Creatures. One day, the jovial Christopher saw a mysterious symbol and became obsessed with it, becoming cold and withdrawn. Miranda grew worried and told her children to hide somewhere where Christopher did not know about.[1] That night, Miranda had her children hide in the Root Cellar and told them not to come out until day. However, Eloise followed her mother, while a frightened Victor remained inside until daybreak. When he emerged, everyone had been killed by the Creatures. The trauma of the event, and the guilt of not being able to protect his sister, caused him to block out memories of her.[2]
Victor moved the cars of the deceased to a clearing in the forest, and spent possibly decades surviving alone in the Township, drawing maps and important events to remember them with crayons and markers. Eventually, he moved to Colony House after or before more people arrived.
Season 1[]
Victor goes to the pantry in search of peaches and finds Julie Matthews, a new arrival, tied up nearby. Victor remarks that two cars haven’t been seen together in a long time, and asks her what she thinks it means. As Julie begins to cry, Fatima arrives and shoos Victor away, apologizing for him and explaining that he has simply been trapped there for a very long time. Victor then goes to his room and draws the event.[3]
The next day, Victor measures the amount of steps it takes to get from the house to the trees. Ethan comes across Victor outside the House and asks if he is looking for something and if he needs help. Victor replies that he is checking something, and when asked what he’s checking for, complains that Ethan asks a lot of questions. Ethan offers to help him check, but Victor calls him trouble, and tells him to go away. Ethan then asks about the Boy in White, and Victor becomes interested. Victor then tells Ethan that he’s checking to see if the trees moved, but says he isn’t done checking. Julie then sees Ethan and yells at him to get back inside. Julie tells him not to hang out with Victor anymore, believing him to be creepy.[4]
Victor draws Julie in crayon while she sleeps. When she wakes up, she recoils in fright. Victor asks her if she knows the feeling of forgetting a dream but then remembering it later and realizing that it may have actually happened. Victor continues to say that he is starting to remember things he thought were dreams while she looks around uncomfortably. He then hands her the drawing which he made for her, leaving her confused. Victor then goes to the Diner and tells Ethan the trees have moved four inches closer, which is bad. Ethan asks if they should tell someone, but Victor says they wouldn’t understand. Victor then asks something important: if the picture he drew of the Boy in White is the one Ethan saw. Ethan says it’s him, and seeing Victor’s face fall asks what’s wrong. Victor answers that it means the Boy was real when Jim returns, and seeing Victor’s drawing, marches Victor away and orders him to stay away from Ethan, shoving him out the door. Victor later goes to the Matthews' house, where he finds Ethan. Victor tells him that they need to find the Boy in White, because they need to ask him why he’s back. Ethan says he can’t leave but Victor says he has to because the Boy chose him like he once chose Victor. Ethan asks if this is like a quest, and Victor agrees, giving him a walking stick more befitting of “a quest” than the crutch.
As they trek through the forest, Victor explains that it had been so long he thought the Boy in White was a dream, who first appeared right before two cars arrived on the same day, just like with Ethan, although long ago. As they talk, Victor reveals that he has been in the Township longer than anyone, but he gets angry and defensive when Ethan asks what happened to his parents. Ethan then reveals that his baby brother, Thomas, died recently. Victor is shocked by this revelation, and Ethan explains that he is telling him because Victor is his friend. Victor then spots the Boy in White and points him out to Ethan, and has them follow. Victor and Ethan come across a large tree with a hollow near the base of its trunk, which Victor dubs a “Farway Tree”. He then demonstrates its properties by throwing a rock down into the hollow. The rock then falls near them as if it dropped from the sky. Ethan is amazed, and Victor reveals that it works for people too, but the problem is that you never know where you’ll end up. Victor adds that there are many more, but this one is new. Victor then hears a dog barking, and flashes back to when he was a child and saw a dog near all the dead bodies. Victor then says they have to go. As Jim and Tabitha search through the forest for Ethan, they come across a dog that looks exactly like the one in Victor’s memories. The two are then surrounded by barking dogs until Victor scares them away with a shot from the revolver he keeps in his lunchbox. Ethan is happy to see his parents, who are frightened by Victor. Jim angrily steps towards Victor, reminding him that he warned him about going near Ethan. Victor points the gun at Jim and promises that he is not a bad person and would never hurt Ethan.
Victor then returns to his room and begins sorting through his drawings and finds a drawing of the dog, remembering that he saw the Boy in White the same day as he saw the dog and all the bodies as a child. In his flashback, the young Victor follows the Boy in White, who begins playing on the merry-go-round outside what is now the Matthews’ house. The Boy in White waves at young Victor, who waves back. Victor then places the drawings on his wall. Victor then goes outside and begins digging graves in the yard while the other inhabitants watch from the porch, concerned. Donna rushes out and tells him that he is freaking people out, and Victor replies that he is just trying to get a head start this time.[5]
At the anniversary party for Fatima's arrival in Town, a drunk Ellis tells an uninterested Victor that he of all people should get drunk, considering how long he has been trapped in the Town. Victor asks to be left alone before Donna arrives. Ellis offers her a shot before leaving. Victor informs Donna that there aren’t any peaches in the pantry. Donna tells him that they are completely out. Victor says that this is the first time they’ve ever run out of peaches, and Donna apologizes. Victor goes to his room, where he begins sorting through his belongings when Julie arrives at his door and asks to come in. Victor reluctantly lets her after she says that she needs to be alone and is having a bad night. Julie asks if he is going somewhere because it looks like he is packing up, and he says it’s hard to explain. She then asks about the graves, which he does not want to talk about. Julie then begins asking him questions about the Town. When the Creatures break into Colony House, chaos ensues, and Victor helps Julie escape the house. Once they are outside, Victor sees the Boy in White, and leads Julie into the forest. Victor leads Julie to a Farway Tree and tells her to get inside and warn Ethan that “it” is starting. Julie says she doesn’t understand but Victor says that Ethan will and promises to be right behind her. Julie climbs inside and emerges in the Root Cellar.[6]
Tabitha Matthews digs a hole in her basement floor that collapses and she lands in a cave, where she is found by Victor. Victor says that the Boy in White said she would come, and that he was supposed to wait for her. As tremors shake the house above her, Victor says that it isn’t safe, for the caverns are where the Creatures sleep, and shows her the cave paintings that they make.[7]
Season 2[]
Victor leads Tabitha through the tunnels. Tabitha asks where they are going but Victor tells her not to talk, lest they wake the Creatures, who sleep in the caverns beneath the Town, and explains that he was told by the Boy in White to wait for her. As they walk, Tabitha finds a suitcase with a wedding dress inside, but Victor urges her to keep moving because the Creatures will wake up soon. Victor and Tabitha continue making their way through the caves. After seeing rats feeding on the corpse of a bird, Tabitha says they should go back but Victor tells her they have to go through and be brave.
In the tunnels, Victor and Tabitha find a number of sleeping creatures surrounded by a collection of random objects, including the ventriloquists dummy Jade saw in his earlier vision, the sight of which causes Victor to run off. Tabitha finds him curled up in a corner, and asks him which way they should go. Victor says he is scared, because this isn’t the way the Boy told him to go. Tabitha tells him that they have to be brave and keep moving, and chooses one of the tunnels in the fork. Tabitha and Victor find a chamber with various archways blocked by sticks, and a stacked pile of stones in the center. A ball-like stone is rolled from one, knocking the stacked stones over. Tabitha examines one of the archways, and sees a vision of a Ghoulish Child, frightening her. Victor warns her that the Creatures are beginning to wake up, and they panic before heading down another tunnel. Tabitha and Victor emerge in the forest, and Victor begins leading them.[8]
Victor and Tabitha wander through the forest after nightfall. With Town being too far away, Victor leads her to his hideout at the Clairy’s Canned Goods Truck. After they settle in, Tabitha asks Victor about the Boy in White, and Victor explains that he is his friend, but hasn’t seen him for a while until now. Tabitha asks him how long he has lived here, and he says “a while”. Tabitha asks him how he arrived, and he replies that he does not like to talk about that. Victor then finds a box of chocolate chip cookie, and shares them with her. He says there used to be more snacks, but there haven’t been many new people in a few months. Tabitha then asks where he gets all the stuff in the truck, and Victor says some of it is from newcomers, some was here already, and some of it was from his mother, his voice breaking as he describes her. They then hear banging outside the truck and the back opens up revealing Boyd, who is shocked to see them. Elgin then approaches the truck, and begs to be let inside. After seeing that the Creatures are stalking him, they let him inside, shut the door and hang the Talisman. Boyd points his gun at Elgin and asks who he is. Elgin introduces himself and says he was on the bus, but none of them know about the bus’s arrival.
Boyd treats his wound while Elgin sleeps in the back. Victor says he does not trust Elgin. Boyd says they are all still alive, but Victor grimly replies “for now”. Boyd asks Tabitha how she is doing, and she answers fine. Boyd tells Victor that he has passed the truck dozens of times and never thought to look in it, asking if Victor furnished it. Victor says that Boyd was supposed to be on a journey and asks if he found what he was looking for. Boyd asks him what he is drawing, and Victor answers things he has seen. Victor explains that it is good to draw them when you see them, so even if you forget, the pictures remember. Victor says he thought many of the things were dreams, but the pictures remembered. Victor notices that the sun has come up. As the four exit the truck, Boyd asks Elgin how many people were on the bus. Elgin answers at least 20-25, and that Donna tried to get them all into the Diner, but it became chaos after the house collapsed. Tabitha asks which house, and Elgin says the one next to the Diner. Realizing it was her house, Tabitha runs off to Town. As Boyd tries to get her to stay with the group, he notices worms crawling beneath his arm. He then turns to Victor, who is staring at him, and tells him to close the truck, and the three go after Tabitha.[9]
Victor returns to his room in Colony House and finds it ransacked as a result of Jade. However, he finds something is missing and begins panicking. Clara enters, and tells Victor that she is glad that he is ok, but Victor asks if anyone was in his room. Clara says she saw Jade and Ethan in the room the previous night. At the Lius’ house, Jade plays the violin he got from Victor’s room. Victor arrives and demands the violin be returned to him. Jade apologizes and says he just thought he could play it for a bit, but Victor angrily repeats his demand. Jade returns the violin, and tells Jade not to go into his room. Jade apologizes again and asks Victor about the symbol in the journal with the picture of him in the background. Victor stops to look, and Jade tries to get him to explain it, believing it to be the key to escaping. Jade asks him if he wants to escape after all that time, but Victor merely tells him to stay away from him and leaves.[10]
Ethan visits Victor, who sullenly asks him what he wants, and Ethan says he was worried and wanted to check on him. Victor asks if he will steal anything else, and Ethan explains that he tried to stop Jade. Victor tells him he should have done a better job. Ethan mentions that Victor saved his mother, and Victor replies that she is nice and Ethan is lucky to have a mother like her. Ethan then asks what he is drawing, and Victor says he is drawings things he and Tabitha saw. Ethan asks him what they saw, but Victor tells him to leave him alone. Ethan gives Victor some markers he found in the storage closet, and apologizes again for angering Victor. Victor merely says “ok”, leaving Ethan dejected.[11]
Victor finds Jade in the Bar, and remarks that Jade doesn’t look good. Jade brusquely replies that Tom is dead and the Bar is closed. Jade then explains that he is trying to figure out what the symbol means, which Victor refuses to help with even though Jade knows that Victor knows something. Victor promises to share what he can, but Jade has to do something for him. Jade refuses at first, but then asks what he wants. Victor then asks him to play the violin, surprising Jade, who agrees to the deal. Victor then leads Jade outside.
Victor leads Jade through the Forest, who complains about having to follow Victor. Victor remarks that it’s strange that the trees are changing color, confusing Jade. The two then arrive at the Car Graveyard, which shocks Jade, who asks Victor if he moved all the cars. Victor explains that after everyone died, he didn’t want to look at the cars, so he put them where he couldn’t see them. He adds that there are more past the rocks, but those predated his arrival. Victor then apologizes for his behavior, explaining that he dislikes when people go through his things, and that sometimes he gets angry, apologizing again. Victor walks up to an old station wagon and climbs onto the roof, and asks Jade to play the song about the “twinkling star”. Victor explains that his mother used to play the song when he was afraid, and she would tell him to think about the twinkling stars at night when they heard the screams of the Creatures’ victims. Jade then dutifully plays “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” on the violin while Victor reminisces.
After Jade finishes playing, Victor explains that the man in the photo is named Christopher, and then brings Jade over to Christopher’s car. Victor says that Christopher was nice and used to make everyone laugh, at a time when it was not easy. However, one day he changed, but gets uncomfortable and tries to leave. Jade reminds him of their bargain, and demands that he explain what he knows. Jade apologizes for yelling, and says he understands that these things are scary, but that he is at the end of his rope and pleads for Victor to explain. Victor reveals that Christopher started seeing the symbol and he stopped smiling. One night, his mother told him to hide somewhere Christopher did not know about and when he awoke, everyone was dead. Victor finishes by saying that there are bad things in this place that make people do bad things before leaving.[1]
Ethan approaches Victor as he examines the trees, and Victor tells him to go away. Ethan asks why he is being mean when they are supposed to be friends. Victor replies that they are friends, but Ethan says it doesn’t feel like it. Victor explains that he is trying to protect Ethan and it is safer for Ethan to stay away because bad things happen to Victor’s friends. Ethan asks what is the point of being friends if they can’t be friends. As he walks away, Victor sullenly says that the orange marker he gave him was dry and a bad gift. Victor says that he has a lot of measuring to do, and Ethan can help if he wants, delighting the boy. Victor and Ethan continue inspecting the trees, and Victor says they have to be thorough. Victor notices that the trees are losing their leaves, but Ethan points out that happens every year. Victor explains that this has never happened before, and Ethan asks if that is bad. Victor remarks that change in the Township is usually bad, but Ethan says that if it’s never happened before, it might be good.[12]
Victor arrives at the Lius' house and is greeted by Julie. Victor asks for Ethan, whom Julie summons. Julie then thanks Victor for saving her life during the Colony House attack. Ethan arrives, and Victor reveals that he has a gift for Ethan. Victor gives Ethan his coat from when he was a child because it’s getting cold. Ethan gifts him a drawing, but Victor refuses it because “pictures are for things that are gone”. Ethan asks what if something happens to him, and Victor scolds him for talking like that. Ethan says if Victor does not take the drawing, he will refuse the coat, and Victor relents. Julie then returns, and Ethan invites Victor to join them in helping Mrs. Liu at the Diner.
As they work, Ethan and Julie try to convince Victor of the Internet’s existence. Julie points out to Ethan that his new jacket smells musty. Ethan then finds a toy in the jacket's pocket and gives it to Victor, shocking him. Victor then flashes back to when he was a child and his mother gave him the toy. Jade and Tabitha arrive in search of Victor but he tries to leave. Jade grabs Victor, prompting Julie to order him to leave Victor alone. Jade reminds Victor that in exchange for playing the song he was supposed to tell Jade about the symbol. Victor says he did, but Jade points out that he neglected to mention its presence in the Caves. Tabitha tries to calmly ask Victor for answers, and she and Jade follow him as he leaves. Jade grabs Victor again and orders him to tell them everything he knows because it might be how they go home, asking if he would like that. Victor defiantly replies that this place is his home and walks away.
Victor returns to his room and stares at the toy and flashes back to when his mother gave it to him. His mother leaves him in the Root Cellar and tells him to be brave and to stay inside until morning. She then runs upstairs and shuts the doors behind her. In the present, Tabitha knocks on his door and thanks him for giving Ethan his coat. She then sees the toy and says that Ethan said it upset Victor when he found it. Victor explains that he had not seen it for a long time. Tabitha asks why he didn’t tell Jade about the symbol in the tunnels, and Victor replies that people should not go looking for answers because they do not return. Tabitha argues that it’s the only way out, but Victor does not think there is a way out. Tabitha tries to persuade him, and Victor struggles to explain how his mother said they were going home but something bad happened. Victor cannot fully remember what happened, but his pictures might, and these are kept somewhere safe.
Victor leads Tabitha to the Car Graveyard. He calls her nice, and says he wants to help but he is afraid to remember. Tabitha tells him to be brave, and Victor says that is what his mother told him. Victor opens the trunk of his mother’s car and finds his drawings. He flashes back to his final encounter with his mother as he sorts through them, and begins panicking. He finds a drawing of him and a girl named Eloise, and remembers his sister, begging their mother not to leave them. Victor tearfully realizes that the pictures are not his, but Eloise’s. In the flashback, their mother instructs them to stay in the Root Cellar and draw their pictures but when she returns, they will go home. As their mother leaves, Eloise runs after her while Victor stays behind, where he notices the toy. Victor stays in the Root Cellar all night. In the present, Victor sobs as he remembers his sister, who he had blocked all memory of. Afterwards, Victor explains that his mother told him and his sister to hide and that he was supposed to protect Eloise. However, she ran and he failed to run after her because he was afraid. Tabitha tells him that he was just a little kid, and Victor says that the next morning everyone was dead. Tabitha then notices a drawing of a lighthouse and asks what it is. Victor explains that Eloise said it’s where their mother was going that night, to save the children locked in the tower.[2]
After word spreads that it is not safe to go to sleep, Victor informs Jade and the two go to the Lius' house. Later that night, Tian-Chen brings board games to Julie, Ethan and Victor in order to make them feel better. Julie agrees, but Ethan glumly asks if Jim is going to die, shocking everyone. Julie says he will be fine, but Ethan then asks if they will die. Julie says they will be fine, but Ethan points out that everyone died when Victor was little. Victor tries to assure him that it won’t happen like that again, but Ethan is skeptical. Julie tries to comfort him by referencing the Cromenockle, but Ethan dismisses it as a stupid story. Victor says that his mother used to say everything was a story, and they’re the ones who get to decide how it ends. Ethan asks if her story ended the way she wanted, prompting Julie and Tian-Chen to scold him. Ethan then storms off with Julie following him. Later that night, Julie is possessed by The Musicbox Monster, causing her to scream in pain as everyone stares helplessly.[13]
Tian-Chen, Ethan and Victor return the next morning, and Ethan says Julie will be hungry when she wakes up. Tian-Chen promises that they will make her favorite food. Tabitha then asks to talk to Victor privately. She asks him about his mother and the children in the tower, and if he knows the way to the tower. Victor shakes his head no, but says he knows the way to the Bottle Tree, visiting which is necessary to get to the tower.
As Victor and Tabitha trek through the forest, Tabitha asks for more information, but all he can say is that the children needed her. They then find the Bottle Tree, and Victor reveals that it is where he found her body. He then explains that the tree is a faraway tree, which Tabitha remembers is how he and Julie escaped Colony House. Victor says that they usually transport people to different places, but this one always transports people to same place. Victor then gives Tabitha his lunch box, which he packed with snacks for her. Tabitha thanks and hugs him before going inside the tree. She is then transported to the entrance of the Lighthouse.[14]
Season 3[]
Three days after the Music Box Monster's defeat and Tabitha's disappearance, Ethan Matthews runs away to look for his mother. Victor alerts the adults and helps search for him. After Ethan is found by Tian-Chen Liu, he scolds Victor for telling them he went to look for his mother. Later, word spreads that the last of the crops have turned up rotten, leaving them low on food. At the Barn, Randall tries to take Alma the goat, despite Ethan’s protests. As Ellis arrives, Victor draws his gun on Randall. Boyd calms Victor down and convinces him to hand him the gun. Boyd acknowledges to the gathered crowd that they have experienced a setback, but the animals are their remaining source of food. While they are scared and hungry, they still have to work together and make things last. Boyd tells them that the Township will not break them, and asks for time to figure things out. Randall reluctantly gives the goat back to Boyd who leads it with Ethan back to its pen.
While Victor sweeps in the Lius’ Home, Boyd and Donna discuss their dire food situation with Tian-Chen. Boyd asks if the animals can tide them over until they can plant a new crop, but Donna says that the soil is poisoned. Boyd refuses to give up, and says they need to carefully plan how to utilize their one remaining resource. Tian-Chen says they should plant crops in different locations to see if the soil is better. Boyd hypothesizes that they have to make it through three months of winter, and Donna says slaughtering the cows one by one might by them a month. Boyd asks about the goats just as Ethan walks in, and he walks back out, despondent. Boyd follows and tries to comfort him.
That night, the Creatures unlock the gates of the animal pens and the Barn, scattering the animals. Boyd and Jade go outside to round them back up, and are joined by Tian-Chen and Victor, who tell Ethan and Julie to stay inside. Randall notices Creatures drawing near and warns them with the bus horn. Jade and Victor herd most of the sheep and goats inside the Bar while Boyd and Tian-Chen lead a cow back to the Barn.[15]
The morning after the attack at the Barn, Jade leaves the Bar to find out what happened, despite Victor’s protests. Boyd and Jade bring Tian-Chen’s body to the Church as onlookers mournfully watch, Victor among them. Ethan struggles to process Tian-Chen’s death, insisting that she is just injured and they need to help her. Victor, trying to leave, breaks down and bluntly tells him that she is dead, reminding Ethan that the bad things that happen in the Township are real before leaving.[16]
The next day, Victor uses a map to locate a specific tree, under which he begins digging. After retrieving the buried suitcase, he goes to the home of Sara Myers, and asks to build a blanket fort so he can tell a story.[17]
Victor says that he and his sister used to play in her house during the daytime, and Sara’s house was Eloise’s favorite. Sara asks what they are doing, and Victor explains that he is trying to remember how his mother and the others died in his childhood, noting that too many things are changing in the Township, such as the weather.
As they build a blanket fort in Sara’s basement, Victor explains how he survived by staying in the Root Cellar, but Eloise did not. When Victor emerged, everyone had been killed and he met the Boy in White. Sara is shocked to learn that Victor has also seen him, and Victor says the Boy was his only friend for years. As a child, Victor was unable to bury all of the bodies, but the Boy in White told him to gather precious belongings of the deceased and bury them instead, which is what the suitcase contains. Sara asks why Victor needs her. He admits that he does not want to do this alone as he may have to remember scary things, and she is the scariest person he knows.
As Victor sorts through the belongings of the deceased, he recalls collecting them as a child. Victor realizes that he doesn’t have something for Christopher, who became “scary” after becoming obsessed with the Symbol. Victor becomes frightened and declares that he does not want to continue, tearing down the blanket fort. Sara tries to calm Victor and assure him that he is okay, reminding him that she is the scariest person in Town. Victor explains that the missing object is the ventriloquist’s doll named Jasper, which used to belong to Christopher. Victor continues to explain that Christopher used to make everyone to laugh with Jasper. After Christopher changed, he stopped making people laugh. Victor remembers that Christopher started spending more time alone, and Victor once found him talking to Jasper, with Jasper talking back. Victor then realizes that Jasper can tell them what happened.[18]
Victor and Sara plan an expedition into the Tunnels to find Jasper, and go to Colony House for supplies. Inside, they find the remains of the carnage from the previous night, and are informed that Nicky was killed and Randall injured. Donna pulls Victor aside and tells him that Tabitha returned along with his father. Victor refuses to believe it and runs out, followed by Sara who asks what happened. Victor says his father is back, and she should go home.
Sara finds Victor in the Car Graveyard, and he says he never drew pictures of his father, as he only drew pictures of what happened in Town and had convinced himself that what came before was a dream. Sara tells him that none of that matters, and all that does is that his father is back. Victor says that Henry is expecting a little boy, and asks what Henry will think of him. Sara admits she does not know, and while she does not know Victor well, she knows he is a good person. Sara adds that maybe they are both afraid of meeting each other and not being what the other remembers.
As Victor and Sara return to Town, they see Henry walking with Ethan. As Sara reassures Victor, he and Henry approach each other. Henry pulls Victor into a hug as he begins sobbing. Victor says he didn’t know how to get home as Henry comforts him.[19]
Victor finds his father in his room. As Victor gathers supplies, Henry asks if Victor could show him around. Victor explains that he has something important that he has to do, and does not think it’s a good idea if Henry joins. He explains that the task is dangerous and he does not want Henry to get hurt, but offers for Henry to walk with him, which he gladly accepts. As Victor and Henry traipse through the Forest, Henry tries to wrap his head around Victor’s plan. As they reach the entrance of the Tunnels, Victor says Henry should return but he refuses to leave and risk losing Victor again. As they enter, Victor prepares to use toy soldiers as markers so they do not get lost, and instructs Henry to be quiet and stay close. They reach the large chamber, but find it empty of all the objects that Victor and Tabitha had seen, with no sign of the Creatures.
The two advance further inside. They find a chamber where Jasper is seated at a table with chairs and a child’s tea set, as well as sleeping Creatures. Victor grabs Jasper, but Henry is distracted by a scarf that belonged to Miranda. The noise wakes up the Creatures, and the Swing Coat Creature tells him that if he keeps coming to the Tunnels, one day they will make him stay. Terrified, the Kavanaughs run out. Victor and Henry go to the Clairy’s Canned Goods Truck, where Henry asks why the Creatures had Miranda’s scarf. Victor explains that the Creatures like to take people’s belongings and he does not know why. Henry asks about the truck, and Victor explains that he used to hide in the truck at night before other people arrived. Henry realizes that it was because he was alone, but Victor comforts him, telling him that Jasper will allow them to escape. Victor says that he heard Jasper tell Christopher a story about the Township once, and they need to make him tell it again.[20]
The two go to Colony House, where Victor demands that Jasper speak to him. He is interrupted by the arrival of his father. Henry warns that he needs to stop, as Jasper is just a doll. Victor tells Henry that he doesn’t understand, grabbing the doll and leaving. Victor arrives at Sara’s with Jasper and asks to use her basement to get Jasper to tell him a secret.[21]
At the Myers’ Home, Victor and Sara try and fail to make Jasper talk to them. Victor yells at Sara for not doing the impression correctly. As Victor spirals, Sara tries to calm him. Sara brings Tabitha to Victor, who directs her to sit with Jasper and asks her to help him get Jasper to reveal the secrets he told Christopher. Tabitha says it is just a doll as Victor grows more agitated. Tabitha calms him, and Victor says he cannot remember. The two sit down and Tabitha has Victor tell her about Jasper. Victor explains that he heard Jasper telling Christopher things they need to know. Tabitha comforts him and tells him that they will remember together.
Tabitha and Sara ask Victor questions to get him to remember what Jasper said. Sara asks about the weather, and Victor recalls that it was sunny and he and Eloise were playing hide and seek. As Victor recalls that he searched in the Church, which she did not go inside as it scared her. Victor is then certain that he saw Jasper talking to Christopher in the Church.
Victor, Tabitha and Sara go to the Church and descend into the basement. Victor recalls doing the same as a child, and seeing Jasper tell Christopher secrets that made him angry. However, Victor then realizes that it was the Boy in White, not Jasper. He remembers the Boy saying that the "answers to the end are in the beginning," starting with the children. The children had been murdered by people they trusted. The children had been told a story of hope as they lay on the stones, the roots became the Farway Trees. The Boy told Christopher that to save the children, he would have to go through the tree, but Christopher got angry and refused to listen. Victor then remembers that he told his mother what the Boy in White said, and that's why she left them that night.[22]
Victor shuts down while Tabitha and Sara try to get him to tell them about his memories. However, Victor blames himself for telling his mother about the Tree, believing himself responsible for her death. As Tabitha grabs Victor, she freezes, and Victor wrestles free and leaves. He goes to Colony House and begins throwing things out of his bedroom window, including many of his drawings. Clara arrives and asks Victor what he is doing. Victor shouts that he kept all these things because he thought they would help, but all they do is hurt. Acosta and Kenny notice the commotion and follow him to the kitchen, trying to calm him. Victor retrieves the axe, and Kenny tries to get him to put it down. Victor promises he will not hurt anyone, but he needs the axe. As he grows more agitated, he asks to be let go, and Acosta says they will if he tells them what he needs the axe for. Victor answers that he is going to chop down the tree.
In the Forest, Victor finds the Bottle Tree/Farway Tree and begins hacking at it with the axe. The Boy in White tells him to stop. Victor replies that the bad tree does bad things. The Boy in White replies that it is important, and Victor frustratedly asks why it is important, and why the Boy will not help them. The Boy replies that he tried to help with Christopher, but now thinks that they need to learn for themselves, as it is the only way they will understand. Victor notices the Boy looks different now, and asks why after years of looking the same. The Boy answers that everything is changing now. Victor begs him to help him understand so he can help his friends, reminding him that they are friends. The Boy simply answers not to cut down the tree and walks off, disappearing into the Forest.
Tabitha Matthews follows a Ghoulish Child to the Root Cellar, where she finds Victor, who continues to lament his role in his mother’s death. Tabitha reassures him that it was not his fault, as he was just a child.[23]
As Jim and Ethan return to the Lius’ Home, they are greeted by Victor, who says that Tabitha fell, and Jim rushes inside. Meanwhile, Victor tells Ethan that he saw the Boy in White, but he wasn’t very helpful. Later that day, Henry approaches Victor at the playground and asks if he has succeeded in getting Jasper to speak. Victor answers that Henry was right, and it was just a doll. Henry apologizes for not being more helpful, explaining that his recent experiences have been a lot. Victor interrupts him and says that he must show his father something that will make him angry.
Victor leads Henry to Miranda and Eloise’s graves. As Henry is overcome by emotion, Victor tearfully reveals that it is his fault that they died, as he told Miranda about the Children. Victor says had he not said anything, they would still be alive. Victor adds that he should have died that night, and Henry should pretend that he did and stop being his father. Henry stops him, telling Victor that he will never stop being Victor’s father, and that Miranda did what she did because she loved Victor. Henry tells Victor that it is now his job to protect Victor, pulling him into a hug.[24]
